India is the largest milk producer in the world with a total production of 150 million tonnes. But more than 95% of milk produced by industrial farms in India are A1 milk from regular cow. However, recently there has been much interest in consumers for A2 milk due to the fact that it has A2 type protein. A1 protein milk which is known to cause digestive issues for some people. But this Hike in awareness of A2 milk ignores good quality breeding of cows.
Our native Indian breeds produce A2 protein milk which is easier to digest. A2 milk is considered by the health conscious people as a healthier alternative to industrial milk which has been accused of being fraught with stress hormones & antibiotics. This organic milk is essentially chemical-free and healthier as the cows are fed grass or organically cultivated fodder.
This hike of awareness towards organic milk in Indian people lures big milk cooperatives to produce A2 milk instead of A1 milk. In past several years, sudden rise in price of industrial milk decrease the sales rate of A1 milk, it convince consumers more likely to buy A2 milk from local farms. This make huge potential for enterprising dairy units to take advantage of indigenous desi cow breed to the growing demand of A2 milk and dairy products in the domestic market as well as international market.
Ignorance to the future of Indian cows:
In the recent past, some milk cooperatives were making conspiracy against A2 milk that this type of milk is not good for health while several dairy farm (Private & organized farms) in India have started offering A2 milk at a premium to consumers. Now, these companies spending lot of money in production and marketing of A2 milk by buying good quality cow breeds from local farmers or private farms. But these companies only focusing on production of A2 milk and completely ignoring the future of Indian cow breeds by cross breeding good quality cows to poor breed of bulls. This kind of cross breeding only decrease the quality of cows and milking capacity to generation to generation, and this will decrease the availability of good quality cows in future like there been in past years. These well financed companies have no ongoing programs for breeding high quality cows for good quantity of milk to avoid this disaster. Their greedy agenda made these precious cows a lonely frog in the well.
These companies should not only focus on the profit gifted by these cows, they should also focus on the future of these cows. Our government is taking steps to conserve native breeds of every region, so big milk cooperatives can also play an important collaborative role in these efforts. Private dairies could also work on improving the productivity of desi cow breeds by traditional breeding methods, better farm & feed management, better animal healthcare. If they don’t have good quality bulls they can use high quality bull semen for breeding. The living sages of India teach us a wisdom that cannot be taught by our universities and the priceless culture of our country expanded from them. Today due to many various factors the Indian breed Cows are becoming extinct. Companies and private farms should organized breed development program for breeding high quality cows with good genetic bulls to preserve new healthier high quality calves with great milk capacity & long life span. We should not only promote A2 milk but should also promote the importance of these cows to protect the Native Breeds of our Indian Cattle.
